How I Raised $500K at 2GI and Built the Blueprint for Boon

About the client

Before Boon existed, I was working inside a nonprofit called 2GI. We had a bold mission, real traction, and the kind of programs funders say they want to support. But our fundraising process was completely broken.

We cycled through four different grant writers. One was too expensive. One ghosted mid-project. Another was slow and disorganized. None of them had the structure, systems, or responsiveness we needed. Every time we tried to build momentum, we hit a wall.

So I decided to stop looking outward and start building the solution in-house.

The solution

With limited budget and no internal grant team, I began prototyping what would eventually become Boon:

  • I built a dynamic grant calendar from scratch

  • I hand-sourced funders based on alignment, not just keywords

  • I tested AI tools to reduce writing time without sacrificing voice

  • I built workflows to track everything - submissions, responses, deadlines, follow-ups

  • I learned to think like a development team, even though I was a team of one

The results

In less than 12 months, we raised $500,000 - without a full development team and without relying on inconsistent contractors.

We secured funding from major institutional and corporate partners, including:

  • PayPal Giving Fund

  • Expedia

  • U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)

And just as importantly, we built real relationships with aligned funders who understood our mission and saw our credibility from the very first touchpoint.
