Before Boon existed, the playbook did.
$500,000 raised in under twelve months. No development team, no agency, no outsourced grant writers. Just a working system prototyped inside one disability-advocacy nonprofit - a system so effective it became the blueprint for Boon.
A bold mission. A broken fundraising process.
Before Boon existed, I was working inside a disability-advocacy nonprofit. We had a bold mission, real traction, and the kind of programs funders say they want to support. But our fundraising process was completely broken.
We cycled through four different grant writers. One was too expensive. One ghosted mid-project. Another was slow and disorganized. None of them had the structure, systems, or responsiveness we needed. Every time we tried to build momentum, we hit a wall.
So I decided to stop looking outward and start building the solution in-house.
What started as a fix became a system.
With a limited budget and no internal grant team, I began prototyping what would eventually become Boon:
- Built a dynamic grant calendar from scratch
- Hand-sourced funders based on alignment, not just keywords
- Tested AI tools to reduce writing time without sacrificing voice
- Built workflows to track submissions, responses, deadlines, and follow-ups
- Learned to think like a development team, even as a team of one
“This wasn't just me ‘writing grants.’ It was the start of an operational model. One that could be scaled, automated, and replicated.”

$500K - and the funders who made it real.
In less than twelve months, we raised $500,000 - without a full development team and without relying on inconsistent contractors. We secured funding from major institutional and corporate partners:
- PayPal Giving Fund
- Expedia
- U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)
Just as important: we built real relationships with aligned funders who understood our mission and saw our credibility from the very first touchpoint.
This is where Boon was born.

From one nonprofit's fix to a product for the sector.
Once we crossed the $500K mark, I knew I couldn't keep this system to myself. The process was too effective, and the pain it solved was too universal. So I took the core playbook I built there and turned it into Boon - a modern fundraising company built for results, not fluff.
“This was the proof. I didn't just have an idea - I had a working system that helped a real organization raise real money, fast.”
Founder, Boon
That first nonprofit wasn't just a client. It was the proof of concept. Every client Boon works with today gets the descendant of that same playbook - now sharper, faster, and running on an agentic team instead of one founder.
The best idea I've ever had.
The system that raised that first $500K is the same system that now runs on behalf of every Boon client - with more specialist agents, more funder data, and more infrastructure behind every draft. Same playbook. Bigger team.
Put the same system to work for your mission.
